'The Block', an aboriginal housing community is facing a time of transition. Forty-two years since it's inception and more then a decade in the planning demolition of the dilapidated inner city housing area known as 'The Block' is almost complete, 15 remaining tenants have been served eviction notices and face relocation before the first stages of the Pemulwuy Project can commence.
The $60 million redevelopment will start in April, 2011, with plans to make the area a cultural centre piece for Sydney. At the heart of the project is the hope to shed the ghetto image that has plagued the area for many years.
Proposed is 62 new homes for aboriginal families, student housing, an aboriginal business college, museum and exhibit space to showcase the cultural history of the area, commercial space and a sporting and boxing gym facility.
