A lone chair remains in a destroyed building near the repaired levee wall in the Lower Ninth Ward on October 31, 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29, 2005. The storm-surge flooding breached the city's levee system, leaving eighty percent of the city submerged. An estimated 1,836 people were killed and the American Red Cross estimates approximately 275,000 homes were destroyed in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.Four years later, New Orleans is still recovering from the devastation, and one of the worst affected areas, the Lower Ninth Ward,remains largely filled with deserted buildings and empty lots where homes once stood, many of which are for sale.
